Atkins Fat Fast

When I’m stuck, need to get back to basics, or need to detox after a face-plant off the wagon I turn to the Atkins Fat Fast. The Fat Fast is a carb and calorie controlled program. You ingest 1,000 calories a day, with 75% or more comprised of fat. Small, frequent meals help prevent hunger better than three meals a day, so you consume five small meals each day. Eating a 200 calorie meal every four hours.

I have found that I’m not hungry while fat fasting due to the very high ratio of fat calories, this sends me into deep ketosis. I find it very helpful to keep track of what I have eaten or even to plan out the day ahead of time using a software program that counts calories, carbs, and shows me percentages of fat and carbs to total calories. My favorite program is FatSecret.

What To Eat On The Fat Fast

Eat Mostly Fat Begin with five 200-calorie feedings per day and follow for four or five days. Each item equals approximately 200 calories:

  • One ounce of macadamia nuts or macadamia nut butter.
  • One ounce of tuna or chicken salad with two teaspoons of mayonnaise served in one-quarter of an avocado.
  • Two deviled eggs made with two teaspoons of mayonnaise.
  • Two ounces of pâté (check label for fat content).
  • Two egg yolks (hard-boiled) with one tablespoon of mayonnaise.

Additional options if you allow dairy, I steer clear of these due to food allergies.

  • Two ounces of sour cream and two tablespoons black or red caviar.
  • Two and a half ounces whipped heavy cream topped with sucralose zero-calorie syrup.
  • Two ounces of cream cheese or Brie.

I eat this menu for 3-5 days, I would not go longer than that due to the rapid pace of weight-loss. However there are people out there who have used the Fat Fast for a prolonged period of time, you are welcome to do your own research to decide on a duration that is right for you.

Note: Dr. Atkins developed the Fat Fast for individuals who are metabolically resistant. He warned that the Fat Fast may be dangerous for anyone who is not metabolically resistant. For people who lose weight fairly easily, the rate of weight loss is too rapid to be safe. But it carries very little risk for people who can barely lose on any other regimen.
